It may be June and the start of summer, but it won’t be long until back-to-school season is upon us. If you’re like a lot of students and parents, you’ll be visiting your dentist for your biannual checkup and cleaning before heading back to class. Naturally, you want to do everything you can to avoid tooth decay, gum disease, and other serious oral health concerns. With these back-to-school-specific oral hygiene tips, you can!

Tip #1: Pack Snacks That Are Low in Added Sugar

Whether you’re packing lunch for your child or you need fuel to make it through a long day, it’s smart to stick to snacks that are low in added sugar. After all, sugar is one of the leading causes of cavities! If you can’t brush or floss afterward, then that sugar is left alone on your teeth for hours on end, increasing the chances of your dentist finding tooth decay during their exam. That’s why dentists recommend opting for carrot sticks and hummus, plain yogurt, and the like.

Tip #2: Get a Mouthguard for Contact Sports

Do you know how many teeth are knocked out each year in sports-related accidents? Five million. So, whether your little one participates in a sport at school or you are a professional athlete, wearing a mouthguard is essential. The good news is that your dental team can create a custom one that is the appropriate thickness, is comfortable, and provides maximum protection.

Tip #3: Brush and Floss Consistently

Although no two smiles are the same, patients of all ages benefit from brushing and flossing consistently. To keep your teeth and gums in pristine condition, it’s important to use the right products and be mindful of timing as well. For example, you should use a soft-bristled toothbrush and a toothpaste with fluoride. Furthermore, you should brush for a full two minutes each morning and evening.

Tip #4: Quit Unhealthy Dental Habits

Does your child bite their nails? Do you chew on your pencil when studying? These are just a few unhealthy dental habits that can result in numerous dental injuries, from small chips to large cracks. So, take proactive measures to quit – it could make all the difference!
