woman dental visitGreat dental care takes more than two visits to your local dentist in Hiram. You must take diligent care of your smile while you’re at home, too!

That’s why we felt it was necessary to cover a few things that you could be doing from the comfort of your own home to keep your smile in great shape. Continue reading to learn more about perfecting your dental hygiene routine at home.

Oral Health Takes Daily Maintenance

If you’re wanting to keep your natural pearly whites for years to come—as most people do—you need to know how to care for your smile thoroughly while at home. It’s true that your Hiram dentist does a great job of meticulously cleaning your teeth and gums within the office, but your smile deserves more TLC than an appointment every 6 months. Here are some things that you can do at home to help.

Get the Right Tools to Brush Your Teeth

Brushing your teeth takes two tools: effective toothpaste and a soft-bristled toothbrush.

The toothpaste that you use should be infused with fluoride. Fluoride helps to protect the teeth by building your tooth enamel’s strength. Enamel is the protective layer of your smile, so if you expect to keep a healthy mouth, you should preserve your enamel for as long as possible.

Secondly, you’ll obviously need a toothbrush. Instead of opting for a firm toothbrush that could scrape away your enamel with abrasive brushing, try a soft-bristled toothbrush. The flexible, gentle bristles are able to both remove harmful dental materials and fit into the hard to reach areas of your smile. Although your dentist will always recommend an electric toothbrush over manual ones, they are both effective if you use them daily.

Try Using a Mouthwash

If you don’t already use a mouthwash to freshen your breath, try implementing the mouth rinse in your daily dental routine. If you buy the right product, mouthwash can be used for much more than minty breath. Antimicrobial mouthwashes work to kill off bad dental bacteria that could still be lingering in your mouth after you brush and floss your teeth.

Unsure of which mouthwash to buy? Trust the products that have an ADA label on them. They have passed a health and safety test from the American Dental Association. Or, you could always ask your dentist for assistance!

With these helpful insights, you should be able to improve your dental hygiene routine at home. Of course, if you have further questions, you should always call our local practice. We would be happy to offer advice over the phone or schedule an appointment to review important points with you during a dental visit.
