If you have ever experienced a dental emergency, it was likely related to a cavity, toothache, broken tooth, or lost restoration. However, sometimes people need to visit the dentist for much stranger reasons. Continue reading to learn about some of the weirdest dental emergencies to date. By implementing an excellent oral hygiene routine and seeing your dentist for your routine cleanings and checkups, you may be able to avoid some crazy situations like these!
Tomato Garden
A patient rushed to the dentist complaining of significant oral discomfort. Their dentist ordered for root canal treatment and got started immediately to try to relieve the patient of their pain. However, the dentist wasn’t expecting there to be seeds lodged deep within the gums with tiny sprouts coming out. After discussing the findings with the patient, it was determined that they were tomato seeds that started to sprout within the gums.
Mouthful of Maggots
A little boy started to rub his swollen mouth, and his parents could tell that he was in pain. They took him to a local dental office to have the issue examined. This was his first time at the dentist, and after taking a look in the child’s mouth, the dentist found maggots hiding in the child’s swollen gums. What a nightmare!
Some Things Superglue Can’t Fix
You should never try to repair your dental restorations on your own, but that doesn’t mean that some people don’t try. In this case, a patient attempted to superglue her dislodged crown back on their teeth. Long story short, she ended up having it glued to the wrong teeth as well as superglue adhered to the top of her mouth and her throat. Sometimes, it’s best to leave it up to the professionals.
DIY Palate Repair
Some dental emergencies could have been easily fixed early on, including when a man came into the dental office with one of the worst mouth infections in history. It turned out that the patient discovered that there was a hole in his palate. Instead of heading to the dentist, he stuffed wads of tissue inside it, changing them out about once a week. Unfortunately for this man, he developed a severe infection of his mouth.
The Calculus Bridge
Many dentists have had to deal with teeth that aren’t in the best shape. When teeth are neglected, plaque and tartar buildups can occur and become quite serious/ Eventually, this can even create a bridge between the teeth called a “calculus bridge.” A man who had this issue started brushing vigorously to try to remove this bridge. It turns out that this bridge was the only thing that was holding many of them into place, so most of them fell out after just a few minutes.
Forgotten Root Canal
Root canal treatment is a common procedure that many patients have experienced at some point in their life. A British man once went to the dental office to have a routine root canal. However, he has been unable to hold any memories for more than 90 minutes ever since his procedure in 2005. After many years, doctors are still unsure how this happened.
As you can see by reading the stories above, most of these strange emergencies could have been easily avoided with proper oral hygiene practices and regular visits to a skilled dentist. By treating issues early on and taking preventive steps, you can avoid dental emergencies in the future.
