A barrel of pickles

Pickles are a very polarizing vegetable. Either you’re slyly asking your friends if they want the kosher spear that comes with their sandwich, or you’re the one giving yours away. There’s usually no in-between. But while many people consider this sour side a delicious little bonus, is it really that good for you? Here’s the lowdown on one of America’s favorite garnishes, and what it really means for your smile!

Good or Bad: The Truth About Pickles

Pickles are an excellent, healthy snack. They’re made from cucumbers, which are relatively low in calories, and pack a wallop of fiber, too. But while pickling them in vinegar and spices won’t change their calorie count, it can change their flavor and the effects on your smile.

The bad news about any type of pickled food is that thanks to the vinegar, they’re highly acidic. This can be dangerous to your tooth enamel, as acid can erode it and make your teeth weak or brittle.

If you have weak or sensitive teeth, this can be even more problematic; however, if you have a healthy smile, eating pickles in moderation should be fine as long as you properly care for them after.

In a Pickle: Protecting Your Teeth from Acidic Foods

A great way to protect your teeth from acidic foods and beverages is to drink plenty of water after eating. This will help rinse the excess acidity off your teeth, helping to keep them strong. Although you may instinctively reach for a toothbrush to clear away any debris, don’t rush to do that just yet. Acid on your teeth can weaken the enamel, making it soft. This can cause permanent scratches. Thus, to prevent damage, it is best to wait at least 30 minutes after eating or drinking anything acidic, so it has time to reharden, and rinse teeth well by drinking water in the meantime.

The Benefits of Pickles

The good news is that pickles aren’t all bad. In fact, they can be extremely beneficial to your oral health in a completely different way. That’s because pickles contain probiotics, which have been shown to inhibit tooth decay. Thus, adding them to your diet can help keep your mouth healthy and strong in conjunction with a thorough oral hygiene routine.

Remember, no matter how you feel about pickles, the good news is that this salty snack can be great for your smile if you nosh responsibly. So don’t hold back. Grab a delicious pickle and enjoy!
