You Are What You Eat: Diet Trends That Can Hurt Your Oral Health

Diet trends are everywhere on social media now. Some promise glowing skin, others go on about quick weight loss, but very few mention what they can do to your teeth. The truth is, even popular “healthy” diets can have hidden side effects that harm your oral health. If you’ve jumped on a nutrition trend recently, here’s what could be happening in your mouth.

Low-Carb and Keto Diets

While low-carb and ketogenic diets reduce sugar intake, they can also alter the natural biome in your mouth. When your body enters ketosis (the metabolic state that gives “keto” its name), it produces compounds called ketones. These can lead to a distinct, metallic odor in your breath.

These diets are also high in protein and fat, which can slow down saliva production. Since saliva protects your teeth by washing away food and neutralizing acids, dry mouth can increase your risk of cavities and gum disease.

If you want to jump into these diets, try easing into them slowly instead of going cold turkey on carbs. Then, don’t be afraid to break it now and then. A few carbs here and there won’t destroy your results, and they could help you keep your mouth fresh.

Juice Cleanses and Detox Diets

Not only are these kinds of diets dishonest about their benefits, but they can also wreak havoc on your teeth. Many ask you to consume juices or solutions containing concentrated acids and natural sugars that attack your enamel.

To make matters worse, because the juice is sipped slowly throughout the day, your teeth are exposed to these chemicals for longer periods. Over time, this can lead to enamel erosion, sensitivity, and discoloration.

Detoxes and cleanses don’t do what they say they do. In fact, your body has a natural filtration system through your kidneys and liver, so it’s best to skip these altogether.

Plant-Based and Vegan Diets

Plant-based diets can be great for overall health, but without proper planning, they can sometimes lack essential nutrients. For example, there aren’t many ways to get calcium, vitamin D, and B12—all of which support strong teeth and gums. Without enough of these, your enamel may weaken, and your gums could become more prone to inflammation.

To protect your smile, it’s always best to talk to a registered dietitian. They can help you plan a menu that incorporates fortified products and various supplements to keep your nutrient levels properly maintained.

No matter what diet you follow, your oral health doesn’t have to suffer. By learning what to watch out for, you can make more educated choices to protect both your systemic and oral health. If you’re not sure where to start, talk to your dentist. They can offer resources to help you stay on track to reach your smile goals.
