X-rays can show your dentist things that can’t be seen with the naked eye and help them to make the best decision for your dental care. If you’ve ever wanted to learn more about how your dentist in Dallas uses X-rays to treat you, here are four facts that you may be interested in.

#1) There Are Many Types of Dental X-rays

Not all X-rays serve the same purpose. Dentists use different types of X-rays if the

y are trying to isolate an area or find out more information. Periapical X-rays are used to show only one or two teeth at a time, giving your dentist a better view of a potential problem area. Occlusal X-rays show only your upper or lower jaw. Panoramic X-rays are more commonly used in dental offices and show the entirety of the mouth and jaw.

#2) X-rays Can Have a 3D Component

When your dentist needs more information than a traditional x-ray can provide, they may use a CBCT scanner to capture a full 3D image of your mouth and jaw. These are often used to determine the placement of dental implants and to diagnose problems that can’t easily be identified by 2D X-rays.

#3) Digital X-rays Give Off Very Little Radiation

Your dentist wants to make sure that you’re safe throughout your appointment. They will always make sure that you are wearing the appropriate lead protection while taking your x-ray. Additionally, many practices have switched to using digital X-rays. Digital X-rays give off a fraction of the radiation of traditional X-rays. They are completely safe and just as effective as film X-rays.

#4) Many People Don’t Need Yearly X-rays

If you take good care of your teeth at home and are at a low risk for cavities and periodontal disease, your dentist may not need to take yearly X-rays of your mouth. While your dentist might still recom

mend taking bitewing X-rays every 18-24 months, you may be able to pass on a full set of annual X-rays.

From diagnosing a problem to creating a treatment plan, X-rays are vital for your dental health. Modern techniques ensure that X-rays are safer, more effective, and more convenient than ever before.

About the Author

Dr. Bobby Shirley loves providing the best for his patients.
