Odds are you probably have at some point. A healthy tongue should be pink and covered in tiny bumps known as papillae. If your tongue looks any different than this, or you feel any pain, you should probably tell your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bickfordandshirley.com\/general-and-family-dentistry.html\">family dentist<\/a> in Hiram. Read on to learn what any issues with your tongue can tell you about your oral health.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>White Coating or White Spots on Tongue<\/h2>\n<p>A white tongue could be an indication of:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Oral thrush: <\/strong>Thrush is a yeast infection that develops inside the mouth. It\u2019s most commonly seen in infants and the elderly, and people with weakened immune systems.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Leukoplakia:<\/strong> This is a condition where the cells in the mouth grow too rapidly, resulting in white spots on the tongue. It can be a precursor to cancer, but it isn\u2019t necessarily. When in doubt, it\u2019s best to see your dentist.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Red Tongue<\/h2>\n<p>Having a red tongue could mean you have:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Scarlet fever: <\/strong>an infection that makes the tongue have a strawberry-like (meaning bumpy and red) appearance. Visit your dentist or doctor to treat the condition with antibiotics.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Vitamin deficiency:<\/strong> Your tongue may look redder if you\u2019re lacking in folic acid or vitamin B-12.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Kawasaki disease:<\/strong> This condition also causes your tongue to take on a strawberry-like appearance. It\u2019s usually seen in very young children (under 5) and is often accompanied by a fever. It needs immediate medical attention.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Hairy and Black Tongue<\/h2>\n<p>Throughout your life, the papillae on your tongue actually grow, much like your hair. In some people, they become excessively long, making them more likely to harbor bacteria. This can make your tongue appear black and\/or hairy. This condition is fortunately not very common, and can usually be improved with excellent oral hygiene.<\/p>\n<h2>Sore or Bumpy Tongue<\/h2>\n<p>Painful bumps on your tongue could be a sign of:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Trauma: <\/strong>Biting your tongue or eating something straight out of the oven can do some serious damage that causes pain for a few days. Grinding or clenching your teeth can also irritate the sides of your tongue.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Smoking:<\/strong> Smoking can irritate the tongue and cause soreness.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Canker sores:<\/strong> This is another name for mouth ulcers, which usually heal on their own after a week or two.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Oral cancer: <\/strong>If you have a lump on your tongue that doesn\u2019t go away, see your dentist right away. It\u2019s much better to be safe than sorry.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Whenever you brush and floss, it\u2019s always a good idea to check your tongue and make sure it\u2019s still pink and healthy.
